Wayne Wilkens Jr. is an Adult Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner with extensive experience in infectious disease management, internal medicine, and acute care. He provides both inpatient and outpatient clinical care with a focus on complex medical management, antibiotic stewardship, and coordinated treatment planning for adult and geriatric populations.
Wayne currently practices within Atrium Health’s Infectious Disease services, where he works closely with hospitalists, surgeons, specialists, pharmacists, and case management teams to develop individualized treatment plans and oversee antibiotic management for medically complex patients. His expertise includes infectious disease consultation, diagnostic interpretation, antimicrobial therapy planning, and coordination of outpatient intravenous antibiotic treatment programs.
Prior to his infectious disease work, Wayne served as a Nurse Practitioner within ENT and allergy specialty care, where he managed patients across multiple clinic locations and performed in office procedures, diagnostic evaluations, and postoperative care. His clinical foundation also includes more than a decade of Registered Nurse experience across neuro progressive care, medical intensive care, progressive care, float pool, and rapid response environments throughout the Atrium Health system. During this time, he frequently served as a charge nurse, preceptor, and member of emergency response teams.
Wayne earned his Master of Science in Nursing Practice from the Medical University of South Carolina and his Bachelor of Science in Nursing from UNC Charlotte.
