Dr. Valerie K. Sabol is an Adult Acute Care and Gerontological Nurse Practitioner with more than three decades of experience caring for medically complex adults and older adults across acute care, rehabilitation, post acute, and long term care settings. Throughout her career, she has combined advanced clinical practice with healthcare leadership, research, and education to improve patient outcomes and elevate standards of care.
Dr. Sabol has extensive expertise in the management of complex chronic disease, geriatric medicine, perioperative optimization, transitions of care, pressure injury prevention, mobility, nutrition, and evidence-based care for aging populations. Her clinical background includes surgical intensive care, trauma, transplant surgery, endocrine medicine, geriatrics, and Veterans Affairs healthcare, providing her with a broad foundation for managing medically fragile patients.
In addition to her clinical practice, Dr. Sabol serves as a Clinical Professor at Duke University School of Nursing and has held numerous academic leadership positions, including Interim Vice Dean of Academic Affairs, Director of the Accelerated BSN Program, and Chair of Healthcare in Adult Populations. She has educated and mentored hundreds of nurse practitioners while helping shape advanced practice nursing education at the national level.
An internationally recognized leader in geriatric nursing, Dr. Sabol is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing (FAAN), American Association of Nurse Practitioners (FAANP), National League for Nursing Academy of Nursing Education (ANEF), and has authored more than 50 peer-reviewed publications focused on geriatric care, quality improvement, mobility, obesity, pressure injury prevention, and nursing home outcomes. Her research has consistently focused on improving care delivery for older adults and residents of skilled nursing facilities.
