Greg Shields, PA-C, is a board-certified Physician Assistant with a clinical background spanning skilled nursing, post acute rehabilitation, long term care, emergency medicine, urgent care, internal medicine, and geriatric care. Prior to becoming a Physician Assistant, Greg spent 17 years in Emergency Medical Services, providing him with an extensive foundation in emergency assessment, rapid clinical decision-making, and the management of medically complex patients.

Greg has served as the primary facility provider for a 94-bed skilled nursing facility, caring for both post acute rehabilitation and long term care residents. In this role, he managed complex acute and chronic medical conditions, performed routine and urgent evaluations, provided primary care for long term residents, and worked to maintain clinical stability during the rehabilitation process. He collaborated closely with specialists, consultants, nursing staff, residents, and families while participating in quality improvement and care planning activities.

His advanced practice experience also includes emergency medicine and high-volume urgent care through Atrium Wake Forest Baptist Health and Wake Forest Emergency Providers. Greg evaluates and treats a broad range of acute illnesses and injuries and is experienced in diagnostic interpretation and procedures including suturing, incision and drainage, fracture and dislocation reduction, foreign body removal, wound management, and ECG and radiographic interpretation.

Before entering advanced practice medicine, Greg built an extensive career as a paramedic and EMS leader with Iredell County EMS. He served as a Shift Supervisor, Assistant Training Officer, and Field Training Officer, overseeing emergency operations, mentoring EMTs and paramedics, reviewing clinical documentation, and responding to high-acuity emergencies. His paramedic experience included advanced airway management, cardiac resuscitation, trauma care, medication administration, ventilator management, and other advanced life-support procedures.

Greg graduated with Pi Alpha honors from the Yale University School of Medicine Physician Assistant Program and earned his Bachelor of Science in Emergency Medical Care from Western Carolina University, graduating magna cum laude. His Physician Assistant training included extensive clinical experience in internal medicine, family medicine, emergency medicine, cardiology, general surgery, pediatrics, women’s health, psychiatry, and urgent care.

Through his work with Post Acute Clinical Services, Greg is committed to delivering compassionate, evidence-based care that promotes clinical stability, strengthens continuity of care, and improves quality of life for residents. He supports coordinated in facility care delivered 7 days a week by the provider network.
