Dr. Marika Widmann began her nursing career after dedicating 7 honorable years to military service by serving in the U.S. Navy. Her time in service ignited a passion for serving the military and veteran population which led her to become a nurse within the VA healthcare system. While working in medical-surgical nursing, Dr. Widmann was heavily involved in various areas of care to include Veteran Women’s Health, LGBTQ+ Veteran Health, and the VA’s Whole Health initiative. She served on multiple hospital-wide committees while holding various seats. 

In 2022, Dr. Widmann received global recognition by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) as the Pathway to Excellence Nurse of the Year – Direct Nurse for her work in identifying gaps in knowledge and education for caring for the transgender Veteran population across the VA healthcare system. Her work led to a VA national reform on the education and training provided to VA healthcare providers on caring for the transgender Veteran population within acute care settings.

In 2023 Dr. Widmann transitioned her career to the Durham VA healthcare system, working in Infection Prevention and Control as the Multi-Drug Resistant Organism (MDRO) Coordinator. Working alongside local and state health departments and national health organizations such as the NIH and CDC, Dr. Widmann and her team focus on minimizing and managing infectious diseases within the VA healthcare system on the Eastern coast region.

As a Nurse Practitioner, Dr. Widmann manages her own Integrative Health Practice with a focus on regenerative and longevity medicine. She works with various conditions to include orthopedic disorders, systemic autoimmune disorders such as Rheumatoid Arthritis and Type 1 Diabetes, and mental health disorders such as depression, Bipolar disorder, and PTSD. She also provides primary care services to patients with severe mental illness at a local partial hospitalization clinic locally.

Dr. Widmann received her Bachelors in Nursing from the University of the Incarnate Word, Bachelors in Nutrition Science from Purdue University Global, and Doctorate in Nursing Practice from Baylor University. She is board certified in Family Nursing Practice and Medical Surgical Nursing through the ANCC. She is a member of the American Nurses Association and North Carolina Nurses Association

In her personal time, Dr. Widmann enjoys spending time with her husband and three sons and their four furbabies. She enjoys being outdoors, gardening, crafting, and seeing the world through her kids’ eyes.
