Dr. Ramesh Chandra Upadhyaya (“Dr. Ram”) is a healthcare leader, nurse practitioner, and consultant with over 35 years of diverse experience spanning clinical practice, education, leadership, and healthcare systems management. His career began as a combat medic in the U.S. Army immediately after high school, an experience that instilled a lifelong commitment to service, discipline, and excellence in healthcare.
Over the course of his career, Dr. Upadhyaya has practiced in hospice, home health, long-term care, rehabilitation, emergency nursing, critical care nursing, and correctional healthcare. He is board certified in Rehabilitation Nursing (CRRN) and Correctional Healthcare (CCHP) and is a certified Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP-BC). He currently practices in addiction medicine and serves as an adjunct professor at multiple institutions of higher learning.
Previously, Dr. Upadhyaya served as a nurse executive for the North Carolina Department of Public Safety (now the Department of Adult Correction, Health and Wellness Section), where he dedicated more than two decades to improving healthcare delivery for citizens of North Carolina through state government service. Before this role, he worked as a Facility Survey Consultant for the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, ensuring compliance with state and federal healthcare regulations. Earlier in his career, he held leadership positions in the private sector, overseeing clinician education for the largest privately held healthcare company in the southeastern United States.

Dr. Upadhyaya holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Nursing from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG), an MBA from the Bryan School of Business and Economics, a post-Master’s certificate in Distance Education from Thomas Edison State University, and a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) from Lenoir-Rhyne University. His academic journey reflects a deep belief in lifelong learning and continuous professional growth.
A published author, Dr. Upadhyaya’s work has appeared in journals including the American Journal of Nursing, Advance for Nurses, and Nursing Perspectives. He has authored chapters in a widely used geriatric nursing textbook edited by Dr. Susan Meiner and has presented at numerous state, national, and international conferences, including the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses, the National League for Nursing Educational Summit, and the American Assembly for Men in Nursing.
Personal Life
Outside of his professional work, Dr. Upadhyaya enjoys reading, traveling, and spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren. He is deeply committed to mentorship and service to the nursing profession and volunteers annually on a medical mission to Guatemala as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team serving indigenous communities in the Guatemalan highlands. These values shape not only his professional work, but also how he approaches life, family, and service to others.
